I have several friends that have gotten tattoos post transplant and none of them have had a problem. All Doctor's will say NO based on medical statistics. It's not a good idea because you're risking infection even if you are heathly. Your immune system will be weaker than an average adult making the risk HIGHER and more easily prone to infection. I said, "no I have Cystic Fibrosis, or CF" and their interest immediately left, lol. Then probably the crowning moment of this entire situation, outside of my sister and I getting our tattoos.
That would really bring this column full circle, along with my poor unfortunate holes. A community for people who suffer from, or know someone with, the debilitating illness known as Cystic Fibrosis. Odd side note, I’ve found that 2 of my 3 tattoos have taken almost double as much ink for it to set properly.

My mom, who had work the very next day, drove my sister and myself to this tattoo shop that was roughly 40 minutes from my home, and around 2 hours for my sister. The combination of symptoms, particularly those that were making their way to the outside, alerted my team to something more troublesome. I was admitted to the hospital after my bloodwork showed that my white blood cell count was extremely low. A CT scan showed further proof of a deep infection in my lungs and sinuses. One, proof is invaluable when it comes to invisible diseases like CF. The phrase “but you don’t look sick” is flattering but unhelpful when I’m drowning in vague symptoms. I noticed that at least one of the younger children hanging around was actually deaf, which made sense given the event at hand. He picked up a ukulele and was just haphazardly strumming the instrument. I am looking to get my first tattoo and wanted something to represent one of the biggest things in my life and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. PICC lines ports IVs or blood draws will not mess up your tattoo. So, this sounds silly, but you know you have that mutation, right? I only ask because i was looking to get that tattooed as well but found out in the mean time i don’t have that mutation.
People who aren’t tattooers often design things way too small or detailed to work as a tattoo, or that will age well. What works on a computer screen doesn’t always work on skin. Still trying to decide location, I’m thinking bicep, shoulder blade, or rib area. I’m 33 years old and was pretty convinced that I was close to the end of my timeline last year before getting on trikafta. Also the butterfly is a symbol of lung transplantation.

Every day is a blast though, the positive impact it’s had on my physical and mental health makes everything CF related so much easier to deal with. With the money I received from the Helen Barrett Award I was able to purchase a lot of equipment that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford for a while. My main purchase was two tattoo machines of my own. I bought a good-quality work station and a bunch of inks too.
